Street fortune-telling is not really about the future. It is a smallperformance: the vendor talks, a crowd gathers, and everyone practises the samehandful of phrases. You are paying for the conversation.
Three sounds to remember
算命 (suàn mìng) — to tell fortunes. 算 on its own is "to count", and 命 is"life", which is exactly the picture: counting out someone's life.
